25-caliber handgun, and one attempted murder was linked to the same model of handgun. Eight of the murders were committed with a Raven. All of his victims died of gunshot wounds to the head.
The victims were initially solicited for sex work by Yates, who would have sex with them (often in his 1979 Ford van), sometimes do drugs with them, then kill them and dump their bodies in rural locations. The murders Yates committed between 19 in Spokane all involved sex workers who worked along Spokane's East Sprague Avenue. The children's birth years range from 1974 to 1989. He has five children (four daughters and one son) with second wife Linda, whom he married in 1976. He served a total of 21.5 years in the military. He then joined the Army National Guard in April 1997 and served three years until his arrest in April 2000.

At this time, the military was reducing its numbers, so he got his full retirement despite being short of the customary 20 years served. Yates left the active duty Army in April 1996, apparently a year and a half short of being eligible for his full retirement benefits and pension. He earned several commendation and service medals during his military career, including the US Army Master Aviator Badge. Yates also served three years in the Army National Guard as a Helicopter Pilot from April 1997 through April 2000. Yates was stationed in various countries outside the continental United States, including Germany and later Somalia and Haiti during the United Nations peacekeeping missions of the 1990s. In October 1977, Yates enlisted in the United States Army, in which he became certified to fly civilian transport airplanes and helicopters. In 1975, he was hired by the Washington State Department of Corrections to work as a correction officer at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. Yates graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1970. Before his birth, his grandmother murdered his grandfather with an axe in 1945.

She was of darker complexion and rather goodhearted towards him, but it wasn’t his wife. I also said that there was a woman connected – not as a direct accomplice but a link between the killer and some of his victims. Well, I told her exactly what I saw and felt about this guy – I described what he looked like, his build, hair line, large hands and neck, good physical shape for his age, his sexual dysfunction issues, and that he worked in a shop with a lot of metal. It was good that I knew nothing, so my knowledge wouldn’t taint any intuitive impressions. I knew absolutely nothing about the case or the investigation when I was approached in Walla Walla by the cousin of victim Sunny Oster. I had worked numerous criminal investigations as a “consultant” prior to being approached about the Spokane Serial Killer. In 1974 I did learn several proven techniques for focusing these “abilities” and putting them to good use.
